"What is Full Coverage Insurance” -- That is a good question and one that should not be taken lightly.

The term “Full coverage” is often used in the insurance language but in reality there is no such thing as “full coverage”.  This term could mean different things to different people.

Typically, what people are most commonly referring to is they have a loan on the vehicle and their lender is requiring at a minimum they carry comprehensive(some time also known as other than collision) and collision coverage. We often have new clients asking for a quote for auto insurance ask for  “full coverage” but not really understanding what that means they were just told they had to have it.  For example one client could have what they are terming “full coverage” which is a policy with comprehensive and collision to meet their loan requirement but no bodily injury protection , no uninsured motorist coverage, no towing or rental coverage, etc and discover this at the time of a claim if they have not taken the time to understand the options available to them.

Most importantly consumers should focus on what the actual available coverage options are and what limits of protection are available then pick what is suitable for them and their level of risk tolerance. You wouldn’t typically buy a home or a car without first understanding the features/options so why would you purchase an insurance policy without understanding the options/limits etc.  After all insurance is the amount of risk/liability that you are choosing to purchase protection against or not depending on your risk tolerance.

We recommend making sure you understand the coverage you have and what is available so you are making the decisions as to what coverage to have with your insurance agent or Company.
